Fasting can be a useful metabolic tool for many women, but the optimal approach depends on hormonal context. Instead of applying fixed fasting rules, timing and intensity should adapt to physiological phases and life stage.
1. Women with Regular Menstrual Cycles

Note: This is typically the least suitable phase for aggressive fasting strategies, particularly during the mid-to-late luteal phase, where hormonal fluctuations and progesterone dominance can increase stress sensitivity and energy demand.
2. Irregular Cycles
When cycles are irregular or unclear:

If related to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS—formerly known as PCOS), very gentle and consistent fasting windows may be helpful for metabolic regulation, but should always be balanced with adequate nutrition, sleep, and stress management.
3. Perimenopause
Hormonal fluctuations are common and may affect fasting tolerance unpredictably.
