The Journey


In early May 2023, detailed hematological blood panels were submitted to Integra for evaluation. The client was suffering from debilitating exhaustion, physical weakness, persistent brain fog, and shortness of breath upon mild exertion—symptoms that were significantly impairing his quality of life.


The laboratory findings revealed a complex and concerning blood picture. The red blood cell metrics demonstrated classic macrocytic megaloblastic anemia: significantly elevated Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), accompanied by high Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). Simultaneously, the client’s overall red blood cell count, total hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels were distinctly depressed, indicating a severe drop in the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Adding to this metabolic strain, white blood cell differentials showed elevated monocytes (monocytosis), pointing toward underlying chronic inflammation, tissue stress, or an ongoing immune response.


Exhausted by constant fatigue and anxious about what these out-of-range lab markers truly meant for his long-term health, the client turned to Integra for an Integrative Health Perspective (IHP). They needed a clear, practical interpretation of their diagnostic results and a holistic, non-invasive pathway to restore their vitality and blood health.



Our Integrative Perspective


When evaluating macrocytic anemia alongside monocytosis, an integrative approach prioritises nutrient assimilation, bone marrow support, and resolving systemic inflammatory stress.


In our review of the client's blood markers, several interconnected physiological factors guided our approach:


  • Erythroid Maturation & Nutrient Co-Factors: Macrocytosis (enlarged red blood cells with high MCV, MCH, and MCHC) typically points to impaired DNA synthesis during erythrocyte development in the bone marrow. While frequently linked to B-vitamin or folate insufficiency, optimal red blood cell maturation also depends heavily on gastrointestinal absorption efficiency and liver function.
